Welcome to the Northampton Concert Orchestra’s Web Site. The above picture was taken on the occasion of a charity concert given in support of the Royal National Lifeboats Institute on the 21st.Oct.2006. This was also the first concert under the direction of the orchestra’s new conductor, David Chambers. His appointment as musical director of the Orchestra follows the retirement of Monica Coles who had conducted the orchestra for the past 27 years. Monica continues her association with the orchestra as a player and deputy conductor.
The Orchestra had its beginnings with the building of Primrose Hill Congregational Church in 1903 and was called the ‘Primrose Hill String Band’. The Orchestra has undergone several name changes during its long history and in 1999 to celebrate its much wider repertoire, the name was changed to the Northampton Concert Orchestra.
The Orchestra has become part of the musical heritage of Northampton since its formation in 1903. Throughout this time it has enjoyed a continuous history of playing to audiences in local theatre, churches and other public venues and has always been much in demand to support fund raising throughout the County. The Orchestra gives its services willingly and over the years has raised substantial sums for charities.
