      WOODLANDS

      GLAPTHORN COW PASTURE, SHORT WOOD
      Woodland nature reserves managed by the Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust in which the public are welcome.

      WAKERLEY GREAT WOOD
      Managed by Forest Enterprise, part of the Forestry Commission is one of Northamptonshire's valuable ancient woodlands. This means that there has been continuous woodland cover on this site for many centuries and so supports a wide variety of plant and animal species.Wakerley Great Wood provides the ideal opportunity for everyone to enjoy our precious woodland. A network of waymarked routes caters for walkers of all abilities

      VILLAGES

      ALDWINCLE
      One of the Nene Valley's many delightful villages. John Dryden, the famous 17th C.poet was born here.

      ASHTON
      Picturesque stone-and -thatch estate village, venue for October's World Conker Championships.

      ELEANOR CROSS, GEDDINGTON
      Best of three remaining crosses erected by Edward I at the resting place of the body of his Queen Eleanor when brought from Harby in Nottinghamshire to Westminster for burial in 1290.

      FOTHERINGHAY
      Riverside remainsof the castle where Richard III was born in 1452 and Mary Queen of Scots imprisoned and finally executed in 1587.

      KETTERING
      Birthplace of William Carey's Baptist Missionary Society.

      ROTHWELL
      A distinguished small market town, originally with a King John Charter of 1204, Rothwell still holds its annual Street Fair the week after Trinity Sunday.Buildings of note are the Market House, Manor House, Jesus Hospital, Parish Church United Reformed Church and Nursery Cottages.

      OUNDLE
      The most attractive market town in the county set in a loop of the River Nene. Well known for its public school, its limestone houses roofed with local Collyweston slate recall famous Cotswold towns.

      ST.ANDREW'S BRIGSTOCK
      Developed in later centuries around a Saxon tower probably built as a refuge for forest dwellers from hostile tribes and Danish invaders.

      ST MARY'S AND ALL SAINTS, FOTHERINGHAY
      Almost on Cathedral scale and dating from the 15th C. with a mass of windows. A former collegiate church reduced to half its size in the reign of Edward VI, Superb riverside position.

      ST MARY'S HIGHAM FERRERS
      many fine features in this 13th C. church with its soaring tower and spire. 15th C. chantry chapel and Bede House in churchyard.

      ST MARY THE VIRGIN, WARMINGTON
      The whole church has been described as 13th C. work at its best.
