The damp weather and colder mornings of September signal the appearance of the weird and wonderful shapes of varieties of fungus.
It has been suggested that, due to their molecular structure, fungi are more closely related to animals than plants. Fungi play a vital role in nature, some living on dead organic matter such as leaf litter and have an important role in re-cycling. Others help to extend the root system of 'host' plants, assisting in the uptake of water and nutrients. Many of these plants would not survive without their fungal partner. Many other woodland creatures and insects depend on fungi for food and shelter. Although many types of fungi resemble the mushroom MANY VARIETIES OF FUNGUS ARE HIGHLY POISONOUS and should not be eaten under any circumstances. The fungi in the picture were found growing on cut tree trunks in Fermyn Woods. You may often see piles of rotting wood left around. This is specifically to encourage the growth of the various varieties of fungi, as well as many insect species.
