A COUNTRYSIDE NOTEBOOK - things to look out for in the Countryside

The Gatekeeper butterfly is also know as the Hedge Brown, which gives a clue about its habitat.

On a hot day like today, the meadows and riverbanks of the Titchmarsh Nature Reserve were full of butterflies, damselflies and dragon flies. Getting them to stay still long enough for a picture was another matter though!

The Gatekeeper is quite a common butterfly throughout Europe, although declining in some coutries.

The colour and patterning of the wings are very variable and about a dozen aberrations have been named. Favourite nectar sources include Wild Marjoram, Common Fleabane, ragworts, and Bramble.
