A COUNTRYSIDE NOTEBOOK - things to look out for in the Countryside

09/07/2006

An annual plant of dry, grassy places, these were found near the visitor centre at Fermyn Woods.

The flowers are usually pink, but occassionally white. Both have a striking yellow centre.

Common Centaury (Centaurium erythraea) had various medicinal uses in the past, including as a tonic to cleanse the blood and kidneys, to relieve indigestion and colic, treat jaundice and as a cure for wounds, sores and rheumatism. Recipies for making herbal tea can still be found.
