A COUNTRYSIDE NOTEBOOK - things to look out for in the Countryside

The Common Spotted orchid isn't as common as orchid lovers would like and can easily be missed on a walk if you're in too much of a hurry!

Sometimes called Dead Mens Fingers because of the finger- like extentions to its roots, its latin name, Dactylorhiza fuchsii is derived from the Greek daktylos, meaning finger and rhiza meaning root.

The Common Spotted Orchid is found with a wide range of flower colours, but is still easily distinguishable as an orchid and always has between 7 and 12 leaves.

It's a type of Marsh Orchid which often have dark spots on their leaves and patterns of lines and spots on their petals. The flower is found in many habitats including open woods, hedgerows, meadows, roadside banks and marshes.

It is usually in flower between June and August, so now is a good time to slow down and keep a look out for it.
