On a bank holiday weekend fishermen are out in force and the heron is around for its fair share of the fish on offer!
There are two major heronries in Northamptonshire - at Titchmarch, where this picture was taken - and Althorp. Herons breed in colonies and in the early evening they can often be seen in reasonable numbers at Titchmarsh making their way back to their roosts in the tall trees beside the lakes. They have a long life - the oldest recorded age being 25years. The population also seems to be on the increase and in 2003 a total of 10,260 grey heron nests were recorded in the UK. If you have a pond or stream near you, you might be lucky enough to have your own local heron as well!
