25/02/2006

Always one of the first wild flowers to herald the coming of Spring along with snowdrops, the Winter Aconite (Eranthus hyemalis) adds colour to an otherwise drab countryside at this time of year.

The plant is a member of the buttercup family and is native to Southern Europe ands Asia, but not the UK. Its flowers are a good early source of nectar for the insects that feed at this time of year.
