Pipers re-affirmed Corby's Scottish connection at the start of the ASCAR Mintex Cup event. Commentators were on hand to help spectators enjoy the race and the media centre was busy with reporters keen to witness the first real event at Rockingham Motor Speedway

Preparation was continuing up to the start of the race, viewed by some of the 12,000 people that attended the event. The torquespeed and other cars eventually were ready for the start.

There is no starting grid in ASCAR racing. The competing cars are led round the circuit by the pace vehicle to warm their tyres before the race gets off to a rolling start.

The races last for 70 laps - time for the spectators to see plenty of action from the high, seated stands. The whole of the oval track is visible, which means the cars are never out of sight.

The enthusiastic crowds gave the winner of each race a standing ovation both on and off the track. And after the racing was over, their appetites wetted, members of the public had the opportunity to experience driving round the circuit first hand as passengers in specially prepared cars.

Amanda Stretton is the only female driver in the ASCAR championship. Already an experienced presenter for motorsport on 4, Amanda is the new face of Fosters to promote their sponsorship of the F1 championship. She was in plenty of demand for autographs after the race.
The next big event at Rockingham in the FedEx Championship Series on 20th and 22nd September 2001 when spectators are promised the fastest motor racing ever seen in the UK.
