28/05/2009 TRESHAM STUDENT SHOWS THAT YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU TRY | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Tresham Institute student Nicky Jecks - a single mother of 4 with children aged 12, 9, 7 and 1 - left education aged 16 before taking her GCSEs but after a second chance at the college she has now been offered a conditional place at Cambridge and has won a NIACE Adult Learners Award for her achievement. After having a number of part time jobs once she left school Nicky gained employment as a carer for adults with learning disabilities. It was there that her employer encouraged her to study for NVQs. However Nicky decided that rather than studying an NVQ in Care she would be better off taking A Levels and work towards her career goal of becoming a doctor. Nicky said: " I took that initial step back into education when I thought that it wouldn't be possible and now it has given me so much more confidence in my own abilities as well as opening up so many opportunities. I have enjoyed the challenges that comes with studying again but have had great support from my family and the tutors at Tresham to be able to overcome these. Once I had established a routine after the children were asleep and the housework was done I could sit and study in the evening. After having my youngest child whilst studying here and achieving all A grades just 9 months after he was born I knew that I would go on to complete the course and succeed." She is a privilege to teach and her achievements are even more outstanding as I know she cares for her four children as a single parent, an elderly relative as well as mentoring a friend with learning disabilities. Nicky is a straight A student in every way and has been committed to learning from the day she walked through our doors. I am very proud of her and she truly is ‘one in a million'. Nicky plans to move her family to Cambridge over the summer before she embarks on her studies at university to become a doctor.
