WORK START ON MULTI MILLION POUND IMPROVEMENT SCHEME FOR NORTHAMTON ROADS

The next stage of a multi-million pound road scheme that aims to improve traffic flow in Northampton will begin next week.

Engineering work to construct a new road layout around Black Lion Hill is set to begin on Monday 3rd March. This work includes the creation of a dedicated bus interchange adjacent to the railway station as well as improvements for cyclists and pedestrians such as wider footways and crossing areas.

This is the second of three junction improvements costing £2.3 million being carried out to improve Northampton’s traffic flow and reduce congestion for road users travelling in and out of Northampton.

Drivers should be aware that while the work is taking place, there will be lane restrictions and temporary traffic lights at this location. Any disruption will be minimised as far as possible, but delays are possible while the work is taking place.
Councillor Bob Seery, cabinet member for roads and transport said: “This is the second phase of the Getting Northampton to Work highways improvement scheme which is am important element in the county council’s comprehensive approach to addressing current and future challenges of increasing traffic congestion.

“It is also another element in the current strategy of addressing the emerging problems of appreciable growth proposals in the county, in partnership with Northampton Borough Council and WNDC.

“We will of course seek to ensure disruption to traffic, and to the public more generally, will be kept to a minimum based on previous experiences but with such schemes it is inevitable there will be some delays.

“However I very much hope that all road users in this area will understand and appreciate the need for such work to be carried out for the benefit of the town and the people of Northamptonshire.”

It is expected that this phase of the Getting Northampton to Work scheme will be completed by mid-July.

When the new interchange opens, an experimental traffic order will be in place for taxis, allowing them limited access through the interchange between 9pm and 6am every day. These arrangements will be closely monitored to ensure they are operating smoothly.
