DANGEROUS TOYS ON SALE IN NORTHAMPTON

Northamptonshire County Council’s trading standards service is warning local shoppers about dangerous toys that have been on sale in Northampton town centre today (Friday 18th May).

Following a call from a concerned member of the public earlier today, trading standards seized a number of unsafe toy dogs and puppet ducks from an itinerant street-seller in Abington Street in Northampton.

Initial screening tests show that the dogs have easily detachable parts (the eyes, the nose and a bell) which are choking hazards. In addition, the wires inside the toy could be easily accessed by children playing with them and when the eye of the dog is detached, it has a sharp point.

The puppet duck has a small detachable part which is also a choking hazard.

Councillor Liz Tavener, cabinet member for community safety said: “We are committed to ensuring that safety of the people of this county and I’m very pleased that trading standards were able to act so quickly to remove these items from sale.

“This is a reminder to consumers not to purchase goods from disreputable sources; these toys may look cuddly but they have a number of dangers that could cause harm to anyone playing with them.

“Anyone who has bought one of these items should contact trading standards by telephoning Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 and make sure that they keep the toys out of the reach of children.”
