|---|---|---|---|
| The future of motorsport and engineering in Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire looks to be in safe hands as we speed towards the grand final of the Silverstone Innovation Centre Design Challenge 2007. Over the past 7 months, 10 teams from schools across Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire have been diligently working towards one of five challenges that make up this exciting new scheme that forms part of the curriculum for key stage 3, 4 and post 16. The brainchild of teacher, Darren Giles, of The National School, Nottingham, and Dianne Wilson, Manager of Silverstone Innovation Centre, the inaugural Design Challenge is being organised in collaboration with motorsport teams and with an encouraging take-up from schools in the area, an exciting finale is assured come the Grand Final on 18th May. The teams taking part in the Grand Final will be invited to workshops at Silverstone Innovation Centre, hosted by industry experts, where they will learn how to put together a business plan, how to market their product and how to create that knockout presentation. Darren Giles said: “The students seem to have really risen to the Challenge and it has brought the whole curriculum to life for many of them. Working as part of a team to the tight project deadlines also seems to have brought the best out of them and I can’t wait to see all of the final presentations!” Dianne Wilson of Silverstone Innovation Centre added: “Our Innovation Centre provides premises and access to funding for entrepreneurs and start-up companies associated with the motorsport industry. So we are delighted to support the Design Challenge, which supports and encourages entrepreneurship in the industry at an early stage.” With fantastic prizes on offer for both teachers and students, competition promises to be intense. Prizes include: a place at Tim Sugdens Racing School for the teachers; tickets to take part in a Race Driver specific physical fitness assessment courtesy of the Race Drivers Academy and the opportunity to help Sarah Franklin prepare her Ginetta race car at one of next year’s race meetings, in addition to prizes donated by A1 Grand Prix and the Super Aguri F1 motorsport team. To attend the Grand Final on 18 May or get involved in next year’s Challenge, please contact Dianne Wilson on 01327 856000 or email d.wilson@oxin.co.uk. |
