NORTHAMPTON POLICE STILL SEEK TOWN RAPISTS - WOMEN WARNED TO BE VIGILANT AND STAY SAFE

Northamptonshire Police have welcomed the public response to the appeal put out yesterday for help in finding the man or men responsible for a number of rapes and attempted abductions in the town.

Since makine the appeal, the control room in Northamptonshire received a number of calls from people offering information they believed could help detectives to trace the group of three or more men responsible for three rapes and two attempted abductions in the last nine days.

“We are very pleased with the response to the media appeals broadcast yesterday, and have now received a number of very positive leads to work on,” said Detective Chief Inspector John Jones, who is leading the investigation.

A team of ten officers under the supervision of DCI Jones, and officers from the National Crime Faculty and other resources from Northamptonshire Police are working on the crimes, which have taken place in the town since Sunday 31 July.
This first incident occurred shortly after midnight on the Sunday when the victim was walked along Horseshoe Street and into a grassy area near Marefair where she was raped. The second incident occurred about 24 hours later when a girl was forced into a car. She managed to escape unharmed. Shortly after that a woman was taken into a car in Horsemarket and driven just outside the town where the incident took place. The third incident occurred on Wednesday 3 August, again in the early hours of the morning, when a woman was followed into the hospital car park. She managed to get away unscathed. The fifth incident occurred on Monday this week, 8 August at about 3am when the victim was discovered at a location in Exeter Place. It appeared that she had been hit over the head before being raped.

Although it is not clear whether these incidents are linked, victims of three of the incidents have mentioned a light coloured Fiat Punto vehicle and a blue 7-series BMW with cream leather seats. The offender or offenders are black men, who may have South African accents. One is about 6ft tall with a very dark skin and braided hair. A second man is also about 6ft tall and very dark but with a bald head. Another man mentioned has been described as having noticeable gaps between his teeth.

“We have set up an incident room at Towcester Police Station where the team are working hard to track down the offenders and bring them to justice.

“The public can rest assured that we are using all the resources at our disposal to bring these people to book, and will follow up any lead we are provided with. However, we must also appeal for people who know these men, or who have seen the suspicious vehicles to call us. We would of course like to hear from anyone who may have had any contact with these men,” said DCI Jones.

DCI Jones also appealed to woman in the town to be alert and take all reasonable steps to keep safe.

“We don’t want to make areas no go areas and we don’t want to stop females going out and enjoying themselves, but obviously following these recent incidents we need them to be even more vigilant and to exercise common sense about where they go and how they get there,” concluded DCI Jones.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 01604 700700 or 999 if you believe the offender is in the area. Alternatively, if you want to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
