VJ DAY CELEBRATIONS AT IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM DUXFORD

On Wednesday August 17 the Imperial War Museum Duxford, in association with the Burma Star Association, is staging a day of activities to mark the sixtieth anniversary of VJ Day and the end of the Second World War.

The day will see veterans of the Second World War in the Far East gather together to tell Duxford's visitors of their experiences. The Museum has extended an invitation to all veterans of the Second World War in the Far East to the event and around three hundred are expected. The veterans will take part in a moving march past at 3pm and historic aircraft will also take to the air in the afternoon in their honour.

Veterans who would like to attend should contact the Burma Star Association on 01353 776096 or 01223 832447
The Burma Star Association takes its name from the medal awarded to British and Commonwealth service personnel who fought in the Far East theatre during the Second World War. Veteran Jimmy Kemp says "This day will mean a tremendous amount to us. During the war we were a forgotten army, fighting on the other side of the world and later generations know little if anything about the War in the Far East. This day will not only commemorate the men who fought out there but will also help educate
younger people about the War in that part of the world."

Visitors can also experience Duxford's fascinating Forgotten War exhibition consisting of artefacts from the Second World War in the Far East, photographs, and a jungle scene that visitors can walk through. There are also audio-visual presentations showing archive footage and interviews with veterans of the War in the Far East.

Duxford's American Air Museum is home to the only example outside the US of the B-29 Superfortress, the most advanced bomber to be produced during the Second World War. This historic aircraft made a vital contribution to the defeat of Japan by carrying the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 and can be seen up close by Duxford visitors. "Not all veterans have been able to get involved in the national commemorations of the end of the Second World War" said
Richard Ashton, Director of Duxford, "So we are delighted that so many have already indicated that they plan to come to Duxford for our anniversary event. It is essential that the bravery and determination of those who fought for our liberty in the Far East is never forgotten."

Duxford is just south of Cambridge at junction 10 of the M11. Ample free parking is available. Admission to the Museum is FREE for Children under 16, £12 for Adults, £9 for Senior Citizens and Students, £8 for Disabled Adults (carers are free) and £7 for Concessions.
