| Northamptonshire Police are warning people NEVER to disclose their bank or building society account numbers, PIN numbers, or other personal details to anyone over the phone or elsewhere. The warning follows a number of incidents recently reported to Police on the Northern Area where people have been asked to give bank account details and passwords such as maiden names over the phone. In one instance a woman received a call asking for her bank details and subsequently found her purse had been stolen. Similar phone calls are known to have been made nationwide.
PC Gavin Blyth, of the Northern Police Area’s Crime Management Unit, said: "We have had a number of reports of people who have been requested to give bank details and other personal details over the phone.
"People are advised NEVER to disclose bank or building society details to anyone, no matter where the caller says they are from. Even if your bank or building society phones you up they should never ask for your PIN or account number and you should never give them out. "Never divulge any personal details if you don’t know the person you are talking to. Just politely put the phone receiver down."
